The Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS) has revealed that it is working with National Standards Bodies within the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Region to harmonize standards and conformity assessment procedures, a move that will eliminate discrepancies and ensure that products and services meet consistent requirements thereby reducing technical barriers to trade (TBTs).

It has come to our knowledge that some manufacturers have been involved in the improper use of the ZABS certification or Quality marks on their products. This has been through affixing the mark onto the products even when they have not undergone the due process of certification.

The Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS) has constituted a task team that will monitor the use of its Quality Mark by manufacturers. The team has been constituted to conduct countrywide market surveillance to combat the increasing misuse of the quality mark

The proximity to the source he said, would provide ease of access by the mines and other stakeholders who may need to access ZABS testing services.

The winners of the SADC Quality Awards have been announced at the SADC TBT Stakeholder Committee meeting held in Gaborone Botswana. Two Zambian companies have received awards as 1st runners up in the service of the year and exporter of the year large enterprise categories.

Speaking during the handover, ZABS Acting Executive Director Nathan Sing’ambwa said ZABS was handing over the role of Regional Coordinator having successfully coordinated standardisation activities and harmonization of standards within the region for nine years.

The Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS) says the recent occupational accidents in workplaces is cause for concern and shows how some companies in the country may not be adhering to the requirements of standards such as the Occupational Health and Safety Management System Standard (ISO 45001).
