The Zambia Bureau of Standards and the Angolan Institute of Standardization and Quality (IANORQ) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding that will see the two institutions strengthen their collaboration in Standardization, Conformity Assessment and Training activities, in a bid to enhance trade between the two countries.

The Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS) has today received Portable Lighting Testing Equipment through the Ministry of Energy, with the support of the Energy Efficient Lighting and Appliances (EELA) project. The Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency (ZCSA) and the Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS) wish to dispel reports in some sections of the media concerning the quality of cement being manufactured in Zambia.

The Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS), together with the Energy Regulation Board (ERB) and the Zambia Environmental Management Agency, have begun sensitizing stakeholders on the implementation of Low Sulphur Gasoil (LSGO) standards in the country to match international cleaner fuel standards. ZABS Acting Director Technical Services Belinda Kancheya said the standard was revised in response to global market trends and the urgent need for cleaner fuel quality.

This is a clear demonstration of continuous improvement and the desire to offer quality products and services being exhibited by the 3 companies.

The Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS) has encouraged women led businesses in the country to fully take advantage of the market access opportunities available to them under the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). ZABS Standards Development and Training Manager Belinda S. Kancheya has said the Bureau has availed itself to help mentor SMEs to prepare them for high value markets such as the AfCFTA.

The Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS) will in the months to come begin engaging with stakeholders on the need to initiate the development of standards for cannabis for medicinal purposes. This follows the announcement by the Zambia National Service (ZNS) on the planned set up of three cannabis plantations in the country.

In delivering on its mandate of providing standardization and quality assurance services for the competitiveness of Industry, the Bureau in 2021 developed 272 standards responding to the priority needs of the various sectors of the economy.

The Director General of the Standards Association of Zimbabwe Dr Eve Gadzikwa is in the country at the invitation of ZABS Executive Director Mr Manuel Mutale. The visit is part of the activities outlined for this years’ World Standards Day that will take place from 12th to 14th October 2021.

ZABS has welcomed the creation of the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises and is optimistic that the ministry will play a key role in helping to strengthen SME growth and productivity in the country.
