The Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS) is pleased to inform its stakeholders and the general public that it is now an accredited organisation in the fields of Mass and Volume calibrations. ZABS has been accredited by the Southern African Development Community Accreditation Services (SADCAS).

Accreditation is a process in which a third party recognised institution gives formal recognition of competence to an organisation to perform a specific task(s) in accordance with specified guidelines.

In this regard, the third party institution is SADCAS while the organisation being recognised as competent is ZABS. The specific a task for which accreditation has been awarded are that of Mass and Volume calibrations, while the specific guideline is the ISO/IEC 17025 that sets "General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories". This is the standard used by testing and calibration laboratories worldwide.

The accreditation process confirmed that ZABS has established a quality management system based on ISO/IEC 17025 and that it has trained and competent personnel to carry out the calibrations. The process involved auditing of both the management and technical systems, reviewing of documentation and practical assessments for personnel.

The significance of the award of accreditation is that the service offered by ZABS in Mass and Volume calibrations is internationally recognised and puts ZABS at equal standing with other laboratories in the world that are also accredited for a similar service.

ZABS is proud to be the first government department in the Republic of Zambia to be accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 international Standard. ZABS believes that the accreditation will bring confidence in the services that it provides to its clients and will further bring mutual benefits to both parties in the area of doing business.

In our quest to have all ZABS services internationally recognised, the process of having the testing laboratories accredited has reached an advanced stage with the application for accreditation having been submitted to SADCAS. Additionally other calibration laboratories are also being prepared for accreditation and include the fields of Temperature, Humidity, Dimension, Pressure, Force, Density and Electricity.
